Party Safe is a TIO Road Safety initiative that aims to:

  • Increase Road Safety awareness in the community
  • Influence community attitudes towards drink driving
  • Provide information to patrons about alcohol and driver impairment
  • Reduce the number of event patrons drink driving

Party Safe operates at sporting, entertainment and cultural events throughout the Territory.

At each event, a highly visible hot pink marquee is set up and operated by TIO employee volunteers who engage with the community to:

  • Provide free voluntary alcohol breath testing and information about the effects of alcohol on the body
  • Conduct activities using vision goggles to simulate the effects of alcohol on reflexes, vision, perception and coordination
  • Provide Information on free bus services and alternative transport options from the event
  • Inform patrons of overnight car park security if it is available

Party Safe was launched in August 2009 and since that time more than 10,000 voluntary breath tests have been undertaken in hot pink Party Safe marquees across Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

The Party Safe program continues to expand, operating at 20 events annually with an audience of more than 120,000 people.
