TIO in the community

Winner - Services to the Community Award

In August 2008 TIO achieved the highest accolade winning the Australia and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) Services to the Community Award.

Making a significant contribution

Thirty years ago TIO started as a general insurer with just a handful of employees and a couple of
shopfronts in Darwin and Alice Springs.

Over the years, the business has diversified to also include banking and financial services as well as
the administration and delivery of Northern Territory Government schemes for compulsory personal
Motor Accidents Compensation (MAC), HomeNorth home loans for low to middle income earners
and the building certification fund.

Today TIO is an iconic organisation with over 250 staff, and operations spread across the Territory.
Throughout TIO's development, one overriding principle has remained the same - it exists to look after
the needs of Territorians, to protect them and help maintain the lifestyle they enjoy.

Road Safety

By far our largest category of community support is for road safety and driver education.

Through the Motor Accidents Compensation scheme, TIO invested $3.3 million in a broad range of programs operated by the Northern Territory Road Safety Branch and the Department of Employment Education and Training over the 2007- 2008 financial year.

Programs include:

More than $1million towards the Driver Licensing and Training Program, funding the innovative Motorcyclist Education Training And Licensing(METAL) program, visits to remote communities to promote general awareness about road safety and the MAC scheme, school visits by TIO education staff and NT Police and funding for the NT Police to carry out intensive research into the causal factors of accidents, accident black spots and identification of potential safety risks.

Northern Territory Netball

2008 marks the twelfth year TIO has been involved with the TIO Northern Territory Netball Championships, with the event attracting junior and senior netballers from across the Territory, including Groote Eylandt, Nhulunbuy, Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin.

Education and Health

Top End Life Education Centre

Life Education Centres, more commonly known in the community as the Happy Healthy Harold program, fulfil an important role in teaching young people about their own bodies and the value of keeping them drug free.

TIO funded the construction and delivery of the Top End Life Education Centre's first mobile classroom twenty years ago and has been a major supporter of the program ever since, providing its insurance needs and helping to fund a second mobile classroom.
